Oh where to begin. I am typing this as my poor sick baby naps on my chest- the only place he has/will nap for 36 hours straight.
So after his fever Sunday, we couldn't get it to go down at all with Tylenol. A shot of motrin helped but only lasted three hours. By Monday things were worse. His ear temp was 102.5 and he hadn't nursed in about 10 hours. He wouldn't swallow his own saliva, take his paci, nurse or take a bottle. I knew something wasn't right.
We went to see the pedi at 9:30am where his rectal temp (poor guy) was almost 103. That is NOT a teething fever! I told her his symptoms and her exact words were,"I think I know what he has but let me check his mouth. ". I knew as well but prayed I was wrong. She looked in his mouth and the dreaded sores were everywhere. His throat, tongue, cheeks and slowly were popping up all over his face an body.
COXSACKIE. Freaking disaster. I hate hate hate this awful virus. She gave him Motrin and attempted to force feed him fluids with little success. She said to keep an eye on his wet diapers. Fast forward a few hours and I was unsuccessful at getting pedialyte, pedialyte ices, boob, bottle or even a syringe of liquid down his throat. That's when the uric acid started in his diapers. After a third call to the pedi, she sent us to the ER for IV fluids due to the start of dehydration.
First I have to say the ER at jersey shore hospital ROCKS. Their pediatric ER is top notch. We didn't wait and the doctors were sooo wonderful. He tries to avoid an IV which would have had to stay in him a minimum of four hours. The doctor felt it was borderline. Lucas shot some smiles and was not lethargic. He was squirmy. Difficult for an IV and not typical of a badly dehydrated baby. He opted to try a high dose of Tylenol and nursing. It worked and he nursed a little. No wet diapers but he sent us home with high dose Tylenol instructions and told us to come back If he didn't have a wet diaper within 12 hours OR we couldn't get liquids in him.
Last night was again rough. He at leas slept in 1.5 hr increments but when he'd wake, it was 30 minutes of screaming hell. He only nursed once at 10pm and not again. He had no more tears which wa a bad sign and little saliva left. By 3am Ryan and I were desperate to get fluids in him to avoid going back for an IV. We forced syringes of pedialyte. And finally at 5am he took a pumped bottle from Ryan. He drank 4 ounces!!! He also had two small pee diapers.
Ryan left for work and today's mission is fluids fluids fluids. I was able to get him to suck on a sippy cup of pedialyte. Not much but some. He also nursed a few minutes! He won't take the bottle from me but I will persevere!!! I miss my upbeat, always smiling , energetic, drive me crazy handsome baby. Here are a few pitiful sick pictures. I am sparing everyone a photo of once the soars hit his face. It is very unsettling and not a way I want anyone to see him :(
